flip

Window 02-FLIP was a site-specific video installation.  It took place at the skateboarding store called Basic Wheel in the summer of 1995.  The store was located in the midst of downtown New York City.  I worked collaboratively with my colleague Taketo Shimada.

We attached two glass plates on the storefront window.  Each plate had its own video screen.  The screen on the right played video portraits of the local skaters.  The screen on the left played moving text.
In the video portraits, the skaters described their techniques, the places they skate, and reasons for skating.  Excerpts of their words were quoted and played back on top of the portrait.  We deconstructed those words in accordance to an anagram system of the word “FLIP”.  The new word arrangements were played back on the left screen.
The installation lasted for a month.  We recorded the responses and reactions of local skaters and added them to the previous video.  Two glass plates reflected the entire process of our communication with skaters around the store.
